The Legacy of Tatum Bass...

Behind the thick crusty walls of Miss Porters Academy

ahhh..my first post of 2012 this year, kick startin it New Years style! LOL. anyway that's not what I'm going to be chattin about. About a month ago or so I was just finishing up on my Bad Kids Go To Hell Review which happened to be my first ever review and blog post i had ever written.
And while I was writing about it, memories started to sink deep in on my mind of my days at a Preppy Private School and the girls and boys I use to mingle with.
While reminiscing through  ALL the crazy shit I use to get up too, at the back of my mind  I was thinking of something as well that I dug up last month about this Popular Girl at an  Exclusive Private School, which is the Infamous Miss Porters Academy.

What happened with this whole dilemma was that apparently Tatum Bass was getting Shit from these girls, about 15 or so of them day in and day out, causing her to skip class and cheat on her tests; and the cause of her expulsion from the academy was that she basically Sucked at Prom Planning.
WTF?? -- Was my initial reaction, okay I get the students, but the Teachers? And the Headmistress??
Come On...

But my rant on this topic isn't just this at all-- its why the media and social groups find fascinating stories like these to reveal to the public.
Some good and some bad...but as I was reading the article on this, I found myself very intrigued, but yet wondering why the hell was I reading it anyway!
The girl obviously sold her story to media stations, magazines, and tabloids.... I mean heck, even Vogue had a special write up about it. The most famous fashion magazine out there.
So Here I go....

When you're at Prep School, the Gloves come off!

And Boy, is that true!
Tatum Bass was the Girl who had everything!
Popular. Successful and by most accounts well- liked.
But something ruined Tatum's experience while at Miss Porters Academy ; a secret she claims known as the Oprichniki named after an old Russian Death Squad from the 16th century.

I am quite shocked and appalled at how the school representatives Handled all of this as Tatum claimed that it had been going on for a couple of years.
Still during all of this the Bass family tried to Sue the school, but nothing came to fruition of it.
As it is already with the times, pop culture is filled with uber- bitchy Prep School Girls, Gossip Girl and Bad Kids Go To Hell being examples and of course Rory off Gilmore Girls as her time was spent at an Elite Private School, Chilton Academy.
The public overall seems to be fascinated by the going - on of the rich, elite, high-society women that are so often documented in TV shows, Movies, Books and Magazines.
I read an article done by the NY Times featuring a page on high life clothes and fashionable accessories that only women with class can wear.
But with its expose of a maybe - but- who- knows- secret society of bitches at Miss Porters and the havoc they wreaked on Tatum Bass's life.

In public school we'd call this "bullying"  and these girls "cliquey bitches".
But not at Miss Porter's. Its Glamorous, mysterious and high- class, because the bullies aren't "cliquey bitches" you see they're a "secret society" that's named after an 16th century Russian torture organisation. So they re smart, well-read, and ruining lives.
"How Tantalising!!" The Times wrote YES!!! Because a young woman having to file a lawsuit against a school that apparently did nothing  after she was repeatedly threatened, harassed and bullied is just so juicy and fun when theres rich girls with SECRETS involved.

Popular TV Shows and Movies such as Gossip Girl (Above)
and Bad Kids Go To Hell (Far Right) involve Spoilt Rotten
Teens who live and lavish in the high life and are
rolling in big $$$$

The school and Tatums tormentors are denying the harassment.
Apparently  Oprichniki has reportedly been disbanded for years, and according to one of it's founders, never had the sinister motives that Bass implies.,but was rather a means to "instill excitement about the secret date of the cherished ring ceremony." (A ritual that has been at the Porter Academy for years..)

Whether or not Bass's claims are true, the fact that the Times seems to cover the story with a breathless, gossipy angle only furthers the ridiculous obsession the public seems to have with prep school girls; the secret societies, the ring ceremony, the traditions etc..
But while some of these things are undoubtly meaning full to women who experience them, the fact that the obvious issue: harassment and bullying is buried a pile of "OMG awesome secret societies!!" is a troubling one and seems to back Bass's claim that the school never took her complaints seriously.
And if the schools and the press that cover them are so wrapped up in the mythology of the whole thing, the realities might slip through the pretty, well-maintained cracks.

Until next time.....XOXO
